As the countryside bloomed with the original cottage garden, nature met artifice in the gardens of royalty. ‘Alleyed’, knotted and herbed, sweetly scented and intricately patterned, they painted the lily and threw perfume on the violet. At Richmond, Whitehall and Hampton Court, gardens flourished as Europe divided.
