Linocut printing with a focus on Orchids

Emma James
This course is cancelled

Linocut is a versatile medium, which can be used to create bold expressive prints. Drawing inspiration for images from the Orchid Display in the Glasshouse Range at the Botanic Garden, and working with tutor Emma James, this two-day course will allow you to explore how to draw, adapt and transfer your own image for a linocut. You will spend some time in the Garden’s Glasshouses sketching orchids as well as studying them closely in the workshop.

Throughout the course Emma will be on hand to demonstrate all the techniques you’ll need and show you examples of Lino prints. The course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience of linocut techniques. Materials and some tools will be available to use, but you will need to provide your own set of tools.

Day 1: Explore mark-making techniques with different tools. Using a single cut lino image, you will learn simple but effective methods of adding further colours and extending the possibilities of image creation. Emma will demonstrate how to apply the inks with rollers and produce prints using a press, as well as the opportunity to hand burnish prints. Learn how to register your lino block to create accurate layered images.

Day 2: Learn and work with the ‘Reduction Process’ and create a single block, layered multi-coloured image. The Reduction Process will be discussed at the end of Day 1 to allow for planning should you choose to do so.

Materials and some tools will be available to use, but you will need to provide your own set of cutting tools
