Using the festive season as inspiration, we will look at the historical uses of spices at this time of year, and discuss how these have shaped some of the traditions we still follow today. We will explore how these plants from far-flung places became integrated into our culture. The sensory experience of handling and examining the spices, alongside seeing some of them growing in the Botanic Garden Glasshouse, will make this a truly immersive experience. During the session we will use some of the spices to make Christmas-themed goodies, such as mulled apple juice, pomanders and Christmas decorations.
Natural Learning Oxford is a collaboration between Emma Williams and Kate Castleden. Having worked together at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, Emma and Kate are now using their skills and experience to offer creative interactive workshops which explore the natural world. The complementary combination of their backgrounds (Emma: fine art and environmental conservation and Kate: plant science and science communication) means their sessions always have something for everyone.
The wearing of face coverings is requested whilst in the Classroom, and all indoor facilities at the Garden, unless you are exempt.
