While the Garden is closed due to COVID-19 and everyone is at home, our Learning team has developed some activities for families to do at home. We hope that you enjoy spending some time exploring, finding out and making your own creations inspired by nature.
We’d love to see what you create, please tag us on Twitter with photos of your work @CUBGLearning #CUBGFamily.
Make a mini flower press
To help conserve plants it’s important we learn about them – especially those that grow in our gardens and near to where we live. In this activity you can make a mini flower press which you can use to start your own pressed plant collection.
Even if you don’t have a garden you can still grow plenty of plants on your windowsill. Making your own pots and watching seeds germinate is great fun. Download this activity for ideas about what you can grow and how you can make your pots extra fancy.
Paint like a petal
Flowers are nature’s artists. Blues, purples, yellows and reds – flowers come in an amazing rainbow of colours and shades. In this activity learn about the science of petal colour and use real pigments from plants and special flower tricks to paint like a petal.
Leaf Foil Art
Leaves do a very important job for plants – they capture energy from the sun and use it to make food. They’re also incredibly beautiful and come in all sorts of wonderful shapes and sizes. In this activity you can capture the beauty of leaves by creating some dazzling leaf art.
Flowers are fantastic! Not only do they look and smell great but they do one of the most important jobs for plants – flowers make seeds. In this activity you can find out all about the different parts of a flower and have a go at making your own giant version out of paper.
Make a bee rainbow
Find out about how bees see the world and have a go at making a special rainbow using the colours bees see. Display in your window to spread a bit of joy and to say thank you to nhs staff and key workers.
Have you ever wondered what to do with left over seeds? If you’ve got any spare seeds at home you could organise a seed share for your neighbours – its fun, easy and helps spread a bit of cheer.
Learn about flowers and pollination and create your own super flower.
