The Rosid group of eudicots also has elaborate, showy flowers. Usually they are bilaterally symmetrical and bisexual, with four or five whorled petals. The Rosids originated around 100–125 million years ago, and include beans, squashes, geraniums, mallows, many British trees including birch and oak, and the plant scientist’s workhorse, Arabidopsis.
