The alga Chara has a gametophyte-dominant lifecycle, and the fertilised eggs are retained on the parent plant, giving protection and food. Chara is found in fresh water. Branches are borne in whorls, appearing in clusters around the stem. It feels rough because of calcium salt deposits on the cell wall, hence the common name ‘stonewort’.
