Humphry Repton: Landscaping with Taste and Palette

Dr Twigs Way
Friday 16 March 2018

‘My habit of landscape sketching I have considerably improved by practice and this may be of great use in shewing effects where descriptions are not sufficient’. So said Humphry Repton (1752-1818), embarking on a career in landscape gardening which was to see him create over 200 of his famous ‘Red Books’ detailing the ‘polite improvements’ of the Regency Age. Mentioned in Jane Austen, lampooned by Thomas Love Peacock, Repton designed gardens for the beau monde and left a wealth of watercolours which give us a wonderful insight into shifting fashion and social change through landscape.
