Illustrating Pollinators & Plants

Lizzie Harper
Tuesday 19 June - Wednesday 20 June 2018

This two-day course will take a close look at some of the pollinators that visit the Botanic Garden. We will work with the Garden’s plant collection whilst learning more about these amazing animals; drawing and painting them along with the plants with which they interact.

Day one will involve seeing what insects and invertebrates there are in the Garden, learning their anatomy and life cycles, and trying to link them to specific plants. You’ll create drawings of several insects from the collection, before deciding on one to focus on. There will be tips about drawing symmetrical insects and advice on how to put together the composition of a painting that includes both insects and plants.

Day two will focus on creating an illustration of one insect with a plant. Lizzie will give demonstrations of how to show shine, build up colour, and illustrate transparent wings. By the end of day two, students may have finished a watercolour illustration of an insect with plant. The course will also look at why incomplete drawings and paintings can be as successful as fully detailed ones.

This course would suit those with previous experience of drawing and of working with watercolour.
