Iris unguicularis

The delicate flowers of Iris unguicularis are emerging through dense tufts of evergreen foliage to bring seasonal floral interest to the Systematic Beds.
Iris unguicularis is a rhizomatous perennial originating in the Mediterranean. The slender leaves reach 60cm in length, and form dense clumps. The fragrant flowers are solitary, with only one being borne on a short stem, and these struggle to emerge through the foliage. The lavender-coloured falls are reflexed, and have white veining and a central yellow marking. The standards are similar in size and colour, but are erect. I. unguicularis will continue to produce flowers throughout winter.
