Alnus hirsuta

A close look at Alnus hirsuta reveals attractive pink-tinged catkins.
It is easy to overlook the alders for much of the year, but during autumn and winter they delight with their delicate catkins. In the case of Alnus hirsuta these are initially glossy with a pink hue and a scaly appearance. This is a hardy species occurring in north east Asia. It was originally introduced into our gardens by the plant collector Charles Maries, who collected for the renowned nursery Veitch and Sons. It prefers moist conditions, but grwos well in ordinary garden soils.
