This rangy shrub of Calliandra haematocephala in the West Tropics corridor of the Glasshouse Range is currently producing spectacular, crimson powderpuff
flowers.
The tightly knotted buds arranged around a capitulum or head explode into a starburst of silky stamens. They collapse into rather dishevelled mopheads, but are flowering is profuse and they are quickly replaced. A member of the Fabaceae native to Bolivia, beans are produced in pods after pollination.
