Through the Woodland and on the Systematic Beds, hoops of orange and yellow crown imperial bells sporting a tuft of bright green leaves are standing in joyful crowds.

Parrotia persica

The spidery, crimson flowers on the Persian ironwood, Parrotia persica are just emerging. It is unusual to see the tree in bloom before Christmas and so soon after leaf-drop. The whole tree is embroidered with the silk knots, each glowing crimson cupped in leathery brown cauldrons.

While waiting for a bit more warmth to encourage them out, enjoy the self-grafted latticework of the snakeskin bark.
