Completely smothering the pergola in the Dry Garden, Clematis armandii is in full flowering spate. The star-shaped, blistering white, five-petalled flowers have a pompom of stamens pinned at the centre and are densely packed against the long, leathery evergreen leaves.
With profuse flowering, evergreen leaves and a vigorous habit if given a little shelter, no wonder it's one of Roy Lancaster's favourites.
