Platycodon grandiflora

This beautiful balloon flower, Platycodon grandiflora, in the Campanulaceae family is coming into bloom on the southern edge of the European section of the Limeston Rock Garden. When on the cusp of opening, the inflated buds resemble a hot air balloon before peeling back into open star-shaped flowers in a bright mauve-blue with deep inky veining.
The flowers stems and calyces are a bloomy, bruise blue also.
