Smokebushes in the Autumn Garden

The several species and varieties of Cotinus in the Autumn Garden are creating real bonfire warmth with foliage in shades from deep cerise through to bright orange and gold. Making large shrubs, Cotinus work really well in combination, providing the foliage foil to the scarlet drupes of the many spindle species used here and late flowering herbaceous material such as Rudbeckia hirta and Verbena bonariensis, all anchored by the dark blackberry and burgundy tones in the puckered leaves and spent flowerheads of Hydrangea quercifolia
