This clump-forming perennial is thriving in a westerly aspect at Cory Lodge.
Comprising 50 species the genus Alstroemeria originates from South America, where species can be found growing in a variety of habitats, from mountains to low grasslands. Members of the genus have rhizome-like tubers and erect stems with alternate, linear foliage and terminal umbels of attractive funnel-shaped flowers. A. psittacina is a Brazilian species with slender, red lily-shaped flowers, bearing a yellow-green tip and black speckles. This is an attractive species which enjoys well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, though it grows vigorously when given the right conditions. The species name psittacina means parrot-like, and this species is commonly called the parrot lily.
