This stout perennial is enjoying the moisture provided at the margins of the Fen Display.
Hemp agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) is a United Kingdom native plant, growing in moist and wet soils. It is one of approximately 50 species of annuals, herbaceous perennials, subshrubs and shrubs from Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. E. cannabinum is a clump-forming perennial with opposite, toothed leaves. In summer it produces terminal panicles of flower, ranging from white to purple which are nectar-rich and valuable for attracting butterflies. The flowers are followed by fluffy seed heads which are dispersed in the wind. The genus takes its name from the King of Pontus, Mithridates Eupator, who after experimentation with numerous poisons, declared himself immune to them. The specific name cannabinum refers to the cannabis-like leaves.
