Sleepy mallow is a member of the hibiscus family (Malvaceae) that is native to the Americas. The short-lived red flowers are used to create a range of coloured dyes. The petals are heated in water and then left to steep for 24 hours. Further heating concentrates the dye, the colour of which depends on the mordant used. Alum or tin produces salmon pinks and reds, iron produces a brown and potash produces a tan.
