Black mulberry is a member of the fig family (Moraceae) that is native to Southwest Asia and is thought to have originated in the Armenian highlands. It has been in cultivation so long that its precise natural range is unknown. The edible fruits can be used to create a pink dye when alum is added. The leaves can be used to make a brown or black dye when heated in water with iron sulphate, a yellow dye with alum and salmon pink dyes with potash.
