This rhizomatous perennial is bearing delicate flowers at the back of the Winter Garden.
Iris lazica originates from the Lazistan region near the Turkish Black Sea. It is one of approximately 300 species occurring in a range of habitats in the northern hemisphere. I. lazica is a member of the Unguiculares group of beardless irises (including the more familiar I. unguicularis) which produce dense clumps of evergreen foliage, and which generally thrive in poor soils in sunny sites, though this one thrives in light shade and moister soils. It produces stemless flowers which sit amongst the slender leaves in late winter and early spring. The flower standards are pale blue, and the arching falls are heavily veined, revealing white streaks and a central, lower yellow stripe.
