This unusual bulbous species can be found in the Mountains House.
Belonging to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) the South African genus Massonia contains over 30 species of bulbous perennials. Most members of the genus have two spreading and low-growing fleshy leaves, and stemless, fragrant, rounded flowerheads comprising many flowers. All species require frost-free, sandy and well-drained conditions in cultivation in the United Kingdom. First described in 2013 M. citrina is distinct from other species in its lemon-coloured filaments and style, from which it takes the specific name citrina, meaning lemon. This species has a limited distribution in the wild, occurring in the arid limits of fynbos vegetation in remote mountainous areas, and as such human threats to its natural habitat are limited.
