Garden Clippings: 9-13 November

Weekly news updates from the Garden during the November lockdown.

13 November 2020
Week commencing 9 November:

It’s been another busy week for the hort team, with a whole range of jobs from weed clearing to something much more magical – read on to find out more!!

Around the Lake, Paul and Simon (Alpine and Woodland team) have been clearing the sedge (Carex sp.) which is something they’ve tackled a few times over the year. We hope you agree this work is really improving this area around the Lakeside. They’ve also been weeding and mulching through the Woodland.

Pete and David (D & D) have been giving the Bee Borders an end of year tidy-up, cutting back many of the perennials and we look forward now to the first pops of colour bringing some springtime cheer.

More cutting back has been taking place in the Fen Display. The reeds have been cut down but we always keep a small area standing over winter too, which we hope the Garden’s wildlife appreciates.

Over on the Systematic Beds the team had brooms at the ready to sweep the grass! They had to remove the heavy dew before the last mow of the year. They’ve also been weeding and leaf clearing to keep the paths clear and slip free.

And finally, all Garden staff have been busy scouring their attics to donate to the elves this year. Mark and Alistair (Trees and Shrubs team) joined forces with Adrian and Matt (Landscape and Machinery) to help these mischievous elves create some magic and mayhem around various parts of the Garden!  A few areas will look a little different if you get to visit over the next few weeks … let’s just say you may come across a few cheeky, seasonal surprises, which we hope will provide more magic than mayhem for our visitors over the next few weeks! Please do share them with us #MagicandMayhem
