This delicate plant is full of flower on the Rock Garden.
Hepatica nobilis is an attractive species bearing open, bowl-shaped, white, pink or blue flowers, which sit above mounds of glossy, tri-lobed, marbled foliage. In the garden this species requires a cool, well-drained site with plenty of humus, and should be exposed to early spring sunshine, and shade for the rest of the year. It is particularly valuable for crevices or pockets, as here on the Rock Garden. A member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), H. nobilis is one of ten spring-flowering species from northern temperate zones, which grow in woodland zones. This species is of European origin, and grows in mountain woodlands.
