This flowering cherry provides seasonal interest in the boundary along South Walk.
Ornamental cherries herald the arrival of spring for many, with their bountiful display of flower. Prunus serrulata ‘Ukon’ is one of an array of cultivars, producing clusters of double green-tinged flowers in mid-spring. It is a vigorous tree with a spreading canopy, reaching 8m in height and 10m in width. The emerging leaves are bronze in colour, and in autumn the leaves take on red-brown colourings. The genus Prunus contains over 200 species from the temperate northern hemisphere, and many cultivars are derived from the Chinese P. serrulata. This species was first grown in western gardens in the 1820’s, and ‘Ukon’ was introduced into cultivation in the early 1900’s.
