“Plant economics: invest, defend or save for an unrainy day?”

Like all of us, plants live in an uncertain world. Their ability to survive into the next generation depends on making wise investment decisions. Investing in either roots or shoots might allow them to accumulate more resources, investing in defense might protect their existing investments, and saving resources might allow them to survive future challenges. Ultimately, investing in seed is both the key to long term survival and a powerful strategy to escape harsh environments. Unsurprisingly, plants have evolved sophisticated investment strategies to navigate these choices. Understanding these natural systems has much to contribute to optimal plant performance in the unnatural worlds of agriculture and horticulture
